Ranch dressing is the most popular dressing and for good reason – it’s creamy and herby and you can use it in so many ways.

And the best part is that you can make it yourself quite easily. Homemade dressings are easy to make and they always taste better and fresh than the store-bought versions. Plus, this dressing is vegan.

The combination of vegan mayonnaise and Greek yogurt creates a rich and creamy texture while apple cider vinegar provides a tangy kick that balances the flavors and helps create a buttermilk effect.

Dried herbs like dill, parsley, and chives give it that signature ranch taste that people love.

This vegan ranch dressing recipe is a great addition to a meal or snack, whether you’re dipping fresh veggies, drizzling over a salad, or spreading it on a sandwich.

Plus if you’ve already made my dairy-free ranch seasoning blend, you can just blend that into a vegan mayo and yogurt mix and make it even quicker!

Ingredients

This is a brief overview of the ingredients used in this recipe followed by substitution ideas. Read the recipe card for measurements.

Ingredients for a recipe labeled vegan yogurt, vegan mayo, parsley, pepper, chives, salt, garlic, lemon juice, onion, and dill.
  • Vegan Mayonnaise: the base of the dressing, makes it creamy and rich. I like the one by Hellman’s.
  • Yogurt: I use the Coconut milk vegan yogurt by Riviera – it’s easily accessible for me.
  • Herbs and Spices: A mixture of parsley, dill, chives, garlic, and onion – these are all pretty budget-friendly and easy to keep on hand.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Ranch dressing is usually made with buttermilk. For this version, we’re adding vinegar with the yogurt and milk to replicate the tangy buttermilk flavor.
  • Oat Milk: You’ll need a non-dairy milk with mild flavor for thinning the dressing. I like oat milk.

Substitutions

  • Oat Milk: almond milk would also work. I don’t use soy milk due to an allergy but I would guess it also works – I’m not sure about its flavor though.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Use regular white vinegar as a substitute.
  • Yogurt and Mayo: I find I get the best flavor and texture by using a mixture. Using all mayo gives a fatty, slippery mouth feel and yogurt lacks the richness of mayo. Feel free to experiment.

Tips for Making Vegan Ranch Dressing

  • I’ve tested this recipe many, many times, and the combination of the mayo and yogurt gives the best flavor and texture. I find mayo too rich and it gives a slippery mouthfeel. Using just yogurt lacks that richness and creaminess. You can play around with ratios to satisfy your preference.
  • Adjust the consistency gradually, adding the oat milk little by little.

What to serve with Ranch Dressing

Ranch dressing is great on salad and grain bowls but you can use it in other ways also. Keep it thicker and use it as a dip for pita chips or vegetables or a spread for burgers, wraps, and sandwiches.

Storage

Store the dressing in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week.
