Ingredients for a chocolate smoothie bowl on a white marble surface labeled milk of choice, frozen banana, Greek yogurt, cashew butter, cocoa powder, and ground flax.
  • frozen bananas: frozen fruit is the key to thick smoothie bowls! I buy bags of frozen banana slices and sometimes cut up fresh banana and freeze them. Either works.
  • yogurt: plain Greek yogurt adds tangy flavor and creamy texture. Use a vegan yogurt if needed.
  • cashew butter: for flavor and added thickness.
  • cocoa powder: I use regular cocoa powder to add the chocolate flavor. Try dark cocoa powder if you have it.
  • flax: for thickening and a source of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • milk: I use almond milk, this is just to thin it to the right consistency.

Tips for making thick smoothie bowls

  • Smoothie Prep: If you have extra fresh fruit that needs using, freeze it for smoothie bowls. I always freeze banana slices for convenience. You can pre-portion the fruit needed for each recipe in a container or reusable silicone bag, saving time on hectic mornings.
  • Use Frozen Fruit: Frozen fruit is key to achieving super thick smoothie bowls!
  • Liquid: Resist the urge to add excess liquid, as this will result in a thinner smoothie rather than a thick consistency.
  • Blender: Choose a powerful blender when making smoothie bowls. Personally, I find my Ninja blender to be highly effective.
  • Customize: Personalize your smoothie bowl by experimenting with different fruits, toppings, or adding protein powder to suit your taste preferences.

FAQ

Can I add protein powder to a chocolate smoothie bowl?

Yes, you can add protein powder to your smoothie bowl, but be sure to adjust the liquid accordingly to maintain the desired consistency. Protein powder will make the mixture thicker.

Instructions

Notes

Garnishes: Homemade chocolate skillet granola – add 1 cup oats to a dry skillet and toast for 5-6 minutes or until they are fragrant and golden brown. Scatter over about 1-2 teaspoons of cocoa powder and a few tablespoons of maple syrup along with a tablespoon each of chia seeds and hemp seeds. Continue to heat, stirring constantly, until everything is well mixed and starting to clump together. Remove from heat and transfer to a wide shallow dish to cool.
You can also add banana slices, seeds, cashew butter, chocolate chunks, or chocolate shavings.
For a very thick smoothie bowl add as little liquid as possible and use a strong blender.
