Here in Canada, kilograms are commonly used for weight measurements in grocery stores, as Canada officially uses the metric system. You’ll see items like produce, meats, and bulk goods priced by the kilogram or gram, though pounds are often also included.

A kilogram, abbreviated as “kg”, is the base unit of weight in the metric system. Kilograms are used in many scenarios from groceries to body weight and more.
How many grams in a kilogram?
There are 1,000 grams in a kilogram, and this simple conversion is one of the key basics of the metric system.
The word “kilo” comes from the Greek word chilioi, meaning “thousand.” In the metric system, “kilo” is a prefix that indicates 1,000 units. So, a kilogram literally means “1,000 grams.”
This is what makes the metric system and converting metric weights so easy.
Converting between grams and kilograms
To convert kilograms to grams, multiply by 1,000. For example, 2 kilograms equals 2,000 grams.
To convert grams to kilograms, divide by 1,000. For instance, 500 grams is 0.5 kilograms.
